Every school of Reiki has one common practice: attunement or initiating ritual. This ritual separates Reiki from other healing or spiritual practices. In addition to training process Reiki students also experience attunement which plays an important part in practitioners training. Attunement/initiation ritual, or Reiki Reiju, as it is called in Japan, varies between different lineages, but it is always practiced.
Reiki attunement is a sacred experience between a master teacher and a student. This is why some teachers translate Reiju as spiritual blessings that are passed from master to student. This ritual connects us more deeply with something greater than ourselves, and we’re part of this greatness. This process is unique to each student. Receiving Reiki attunement is the most beautiful, magical, and mystical part of any Reiki class or seminar. Reiju helps us better understand ourselves, our True Selves. It strengthens our connection with the world around us.
How to Prepare for Attunement
Different masters will have different recommendations. But the general rule of thumb is:
get plenty of rest
drink plenty of water
try to become vegetarian for a day or two before class
avoid sugar and alcohol a day or two before class
If you have a chaotic work life, slow down your schedule and give yourself time to breathe and relax.
Are there different levels of attunements?
There are different attunements for each Reiki level. The master gives each student an attunement individually. Depending on the lineage, there could be some variations from master to master.
What you may experience during attunement
The first step is to discard all expectations and keep a curious, open mind. Any expectation will limit our experiences.
Attunement is commonly performed during the last quarter of the class. You will sit with your eyes closed and your hands resting on your lap, palms up. Your master will stay behind you for this ritual most of the time and move/reposition your hands at appropriate times.
Everyone has unique experiences during attunements, some very vivid and some very mild. They all depend on your personality and emotional state. No matter what you experience physically or emotionally, it will not affect your practice.
After attunement
You may be very excited and full of energy. Please give yourself time to process. Journaling is beneficial for summarizing and wrapping up your experiences. Your feelings and experiences are very personal; no one has the same experience. Everything is a guide to rediscovering our true selves and deepening our connection with the universal energy field.
Choosing a Reiki master
There are a few crucial things that you need to pay attention to when you are looking for a teacher:Â
How reputable is your master teacher? Does he have reviews from students?
Does he personally practice daily what he teaches?
How well you feel connected with him and understand his philosophy and approach to ReikiÂ
I think it is essential to have a conversation with the Reiki master before registering for a class or seminar.
Conclusion
Reiki is the art of healing, and like any art, a master will give you knowledge, but your progress and performance will depend on how committed you are to your practice.
With love,
