Reiki and Grief

Let’s explore how Reiki can assist and ease grief. Grief is the natural response to loss and could be one of the deepest emotional experiences one can have. To be clear, this emotion does not come only from the loss of a loved one; it can also come from the loss of a relationship, a life direction, a job, or a version of ourselves that we believe in. There are several stages of grieving, but they have one commonality: contraction or tightening of our physical and energetic bodies. It is a desire to go into a fetal position, to cocoon ourselves as a form of self-preservation from this pain. There is no right or wrong way to grieve. Everyone processes grief differently. The only mistake is denying your feelings, thinking you shouldn’t feel what you feel.
Reiki helps open up our hearts to ease and process our emotions. There is no cookie-cutter approach to grieving, no right way. Everyone grieves differently. Reiki will not erase the pain, but provide a gentle space to process it. Reiki provides an energetic field of love and compassion necessary for healing emotional wounds with kindness rather than resistance.
What a Reiki session can deliver:
Create space for your mind to connect with your body again. Grief resides in the mind, playing the same scenario over and over. This disconnect from our body creates physical symptoms like chest pain, insomnia, inflammatory responses, fatigue, muscle tension, brain fog, and others.
Reiki helps switch focus from rumination to self-awareness. Provide a path to a gentle, kind, and healthier way to process our emotions.
Reiki can ease the pain by promoting emotional release, as grief creates energetic blockages and stagnation. Emotional release helps the body restore energy flow, return balance, and acceptance during this difficult time.
Reiki may offer a spiritual connection to a departed loved one, bringing comfort and closure.
The calming nature of Reiki offers support not by pushing pain away, but by making it easier to process and sit with these emotions. Many people intend to avoid grieving, looking for distractions, or trying to numb the feelings. Healing requires facing your grief and meeting it with love and compassion.
Reiki doesn’t magically “fix” grief; what it does is create a safe space for you to process your loss. It is a necessary process of releasing emotional suffering and healing. This practice brings relief to both your body and mind.
Reiki is not a talk therapy. You don’t need to talk about your feelings if you are not ready. You can be healed in silence. The only thing that is required is you to be honest with yourself. The gentle energy of Reiki will work on the parts of the body that are holding onto pain, softening this grip and restoring natural energy flow.
A simple self-Reiki practice eases emotional pain:
1. Find a quiet place. Sit comfortably. Take three slow breaths.
2. Place one hand on your heart and the other on your lower belly. With inhale direct air and energy to your lower belly, let it expand. With exhale, direct this energy to the heart.
3. This gentle breathing will nourish the heart. Continue for several minutes. If emotions come, let them be. Your heart full with energy of love and compassion will tenderly handle them.
4. When you feel ready, cross your hands and place them on your upper chest. Your right hand near your left shoulder and your left hand near your right shoulder. This mini hug also activates important meridians. Exhale through the mouth, with sound, releasing physical and emotional tensions. Continue this gentle breathing for several minutes.
5. Finish this practice by standing up and gently shaking your body for 1-2 minutes.
This is a small act of love towards yourself, a way of telling your nervous system that you are safe and that everything will be ok.
Remember:
Grief is a valid and authentic response.
Everyone heals on their timeline.
Through the feelings your body and mind ask for help.
Conclusion:
Reiki helps lift emotional weight and gives you the power to move forward with love and renewed strength. Reiki by itself is very helpful in managing and processing grief, but it could also provide additional support if someone also works with mental health professionals.
