Our Inner Peace is a Product of Our Daily Practice
What is inner peace?
We are all striving for inner peace. But what is inner peace? Inner peace is a state of calm, acceptance, and tranquility. It means being in harmony with yourself, others, and the world around you. It's not about eliminating challenges or difficulties, but rather navigating through them with a relaxed and accepting mind. Inner peace comes when you are comfortable in your skin. When you fully accept who you are with all your strengths and flaws, when you learn to appreciate your uniqueness. Inner peace is the ability to accept the world as it is and see every unfortunate event not as a tragedy but as a lesson. It is the ability to see a little wonder in everything. When we are in inner peace, we are less affected by stress and worries.
The ways to inner peace.
Being at peace is being in balance. As humans, we are all exposed to a variety of feelings and emotions; we all have light and darkness inside us, and it is perfectly ok – the goal is to find the right balance between them. Eliminating night and leaving only day will not improve our lives. Everything has its purpose.
The most common question I have is where I can find inner peace. There is no ‘lost-and-found’ for inner peace. It is something that we develop and practice. Inner peace isn't something you can find externally; it's something you cultivate within yourself. I know it is easier said than done. But it is achievable.
Steps to inner peace.
There are two equally important parts in this practice, things that we need to add and things to minimize - Expanding and Reducing. Let’s have a few examples.
Expending:
Be grateful
Gratitude shifts our focus from what's missing in our life to what we already have. It’s a fast track to inner peace. Make a daily habit of noting down things you're grateful for. Focusing on the good things can alter our perception of the entire day.
Practice self-love
In general, the world becomes more peaceful if we love ourselves. One of the aspects that disrupts our inner peace is the constant internal conflict we experience within ourselves. By practicing self-love and self-compassion, we integrate inner peace into our lives. You can actively practice this by doing things that bring us happiness and lift our spirits. By investing in ourselves and taking proper care of ourselves, we create space for inner peace in our lives.
Reducing:
Social media detox
Social media is designed to be addictive, which is why many of us lose track of time when browsing. Emotions such as judgment, envy, anger, or hate can disturb our inner peace. Controlling our screen time or taking a day off can be challenging, but it is achievable. By doing this, we reaffirm that we are in control of our lives.
Avoid self-pity
As humans, we tend to fall into a self-pity routine when things aren't going our way. Nothing in the universe is permanent, and life can be hard at times. The only thing self-pity does is that it typically makes us feel worse than we initially did and takes the blame for other people. By doing this, we give others control over our peace. To regain our peace, bring awareness and accountability to the situation rather than wallowing in self-pity. Rather than telling ourselves, "I'm such a worthless person," take responsibility and tell ourselves, "I may have messed up, but now I know better. I can do better next time." By practicing this habit, we're taking back control, building confidence, and taking action in our lives. We must realize that our life, including our peace, is in our control.
Plan of Action
Now is the time to implement. Take a piece of paper and write down what you would like to expand and what you would like to reduce.
Allocate specific time for certain activities. If, after trying, you find that it's not working, maybe the time you chose was wrong.
In the evening, go through your day praising every victory, even the smallest one.
If you feel stuck, try a different approach.
Be consistent, persistent, and never give up.
